0:03 in Hollywood in 1923, and for 99 years, 0:07 they've mostly been recycling the same characters 0:09 and distribution models over and over again. 0:12 But imagine the creation of a new type of Disney, 0:14 one where you get to decide 0:16 who the next Mickey Mouse will be. 0:18 You could be in charge of the storyline 0:20 and main character development. 0:21 Today, we're exploring what a modern day Disney 0:24 or Pixar could look like. 0:26 If organic programming like "Cocomelon" 0:28 can be worth $3 billion and Bored Apes 0:32 through NFTs can create brand new, 0:33 tightly-knit communities from nothing, 0:36 then get ready for the next Buzz Lightyear. 0:39 Let's get started. 0:41 (upbeat music) 0:57 - There's a new kind of show 0:58 called "The R3al Metaverse" that's on TikTok, 1:00 Instagram, Twitter, and Discord, all online distribution. 1:05 And the interesting thing is the characters. 1:08 They're actually NFT PFPs, and that's totally driven 1:11 by the internet community. 1:13 So it's actually one of the first ever animated series 1:16 that will let the community have a say in the storyline 1:19 and the character development. 1:20 The company behind it is called Invisible Universe, 1:24 which initialized invested in 1:26 because every so often entertainment changes completely. 1:30 Here's "The R3al Metaverse." 1:32 - [Voiceover 1] It's time to put the fun in non-fungible. 1:35 - Whoo hoo, somebody slap me! 1:37 - [Voiceover 2] I will. 1:39 - [Voiceover 3] "The R3al Metaverse." 1:45 - The Internet's favorite NFT PFPs are transported 1:48 to Hollywood, it's a parody on the real world, 1:50 only with Bored Apes and robotos. 1:52 (upbeat music) 1:56 - Oh wow. 1:59 My chakras are literally buzzing right now. 2:03 - Oh, hell yeah. 2:06 This is what I'm talking about. 2:11 - Everything about this is ridiculous, and I love it. 2:14 - They've produced over 30 episodes, 2:16 and the first few have already dropped 2:18 on TikTok, YouTube and Twitter. 2:20 Two episodes get released every week 2:22 about a minute or two each. 2:24 Here's the CEO, Tricia Biggio. 2:27 - So we are obsessed with this idea of building in public. 2:30 We love the idea of community ownership. 2:32 And when I talk about Invisible, 2:34 I'll talk more about how we've been building 2:36 with that ethos in Web2. 2:38 But as we look at Web3, we think there's a huge opportunity 2:41 to allow people to collaborate with us on the storytelling. 2:45 And we've built a team of creatives 2:47 who understand what the kind of right guardrails are 2:51 to allow for people to have a role and a say. 2:54 So if you buy an NFT along the project, 2:57 "The R3al Metaverse," what that gets you is 3:00 sort of a ticket to ride. 3:01 And what you're going to get to do is collaborate with us 3:04 in writing confessional interviews, 3:06 eventually writing entire scenes, 3:08 introducing new storylines and characters. 3:11 - Media is entering a new age where the internet 3:14 means the audience can actually speak up. 3:16 Just as "Westworld" on HBO started throwing in 3:18 special details for their Reddit audience, 3:21 so too are we seeing a new way 3:23 of storytelling emerge like this. 3:29 Disney had to rebuild itself with Disney Plus 3:33 because internet distribution changed 3:35 how all of this stuff worked. 3:37 Tomorrow's franchises are going to be distributed 3:39 on the internet in a frictionless way 3:41 where there's unlimited shelf space, 3:42 perpetual distribution, community feedback, 3:45 and constant involvement. 3:47 That's why we think it's inevitable 3:49 that the media industry will be more transparent in 3:52 what they're building and allow people 3:54 who are actually fans and community members 3:56 to help to drive the storyline and to determine 4:00 what happens with the main characters on the show. 4:02 - It's being built in public with this idea 4:05 that our ideas as the studio are not always better 4:10 than the community's ideas. 4:12 And I think that kind of egoless approach to it is 4:16 what the next generation wants. 4:18 - The communities that are represented on this show 4:21 happen to be just a few of thousands 4:23 of new internet communities 4:25 that are springing up all the time, not just NFTs. 4:28 The interesting thing to me about this type 4:30 of storytelling is, because it's around crypto, 4:34 they're going to involve so many more people, 4:37 and it doesn't just have to be that. 4:39 It might even be a sports star's huge following 4:42 or even brand new stories and characters from scratch. 4:46 - We're seeing people democratize storytelling 4:49 and IP generation and identify hits 4:53 for themselves based on their own participation 4:56 versus I'm going to buy into this because you tell me I should. 5:01 And I think that sort of ownership in a literal sense, 5:05 meaning they get to share in the value of it, 5:07 as well as ownership in the building of it, 5:10 are the two key components that we're going to continue 5:12 to see unfurl over the coming years. 5:14 - Many years ago, Disney came up at a time 5:18 where distribution was basically given 5:19 or negotiated by people who owned the means of transmission, 5:23 the broadcasters and the movie theaters. 5:25 Back then, theater owners held all the power 5:27 because you'd have to go to a theater 5:29 to watch "Mickey Mouse." 5:30 All of that is changing, and changing fast. 5:33 Netflix and digital distribution didn't exist 5:35 in its current form 10 years ago. 5:37 But to us, clearly, the next Disney will emerge 5:41 looking like a new IP show, 5:43 something totally community-driven, 5:46 something driven by the internet, 5:48 just like what Invisible Universe is doing. 5:51 - And so there's never been a better time 5:53 to be a content creator, 5:54 particularly when you have owned and operated IP. 5:57 And we're seeing the value of IP be recognized 6:01 by the marketplace more than ever, 6:03 because as things are being decentralized, 6:06 the competition is fierce. 6:08 And so I think it's a unique time to be in the IP game. 6:16 - There's no doubt in my mind that the future 6:17 of content distribution is going to move further 6:19 and further into this community model. 6:22 One of the things Tricia told me about 6:23 that I haven't been able to get out of my head is 6:27 this crazy fact, Moonbug Entertainment. 6:30 It's a creator of popular kid shows 6:32 such as "Little Angel" and "Cocomelon." 6:35 They were recently acquired by Blackstone PE 6:37 for over $3 billion, why? 6:40 Because these properties amassed reach 6:43 of hundreds of millions of people. 6:45 What that tells us is creating a modern day Disney 6:47 or Pixar is possible now and happening, 6:49 where the next Woody or Buzz Lightyear is going 6:52 to be decided by the community 6:54 and introduced on the free and open internet. 6:56 - In many ways, the internet just got bigger 6:58 and the distribution expanded. 7:01 And so we have always believed 7:03 that you can create indelible characters 7:06 on social media platforms via the internet. 7:08 And what we mean by that is these aren't digital avatars 7:12 or a virtual influencer. 7:13 It's a character that is going to capture the hearts 7:16 and minds of audiences and build community, 7:18 and eventually be able to go on to have a multitude 7:21 of franchise extensions, be that publishing, 7:24 film and TV, games, licensing and merch. 7:26 - Invisible Universe actually already is working 7:29 with great celebrities like Jennifer Aniston 7:31 and her dog character Clydeo and Qai Qai, 7:34 the best friend of Serena Williams 7:36 and Alexis Ohanian's daughter Olympia. 7:38 But what's most important about what Tricia 7:40 and the team at Invisible Universe is building, 7:43 it's a way for fans to participate 7:45 in the monetization of their favorite show. 7:48 So imagine now as people build these huge brands, 7:51 you could actually be rewarded 7:52 for being the biggest "Moana" or "Frozen" fan early. 7:56 - If we do it right and we approach it correctly, 8:00 we can build community, a different community. 8:02 We can allow for community members to get 8:05 to share in the value of the IP we're creating. 8:08 People now want to feel like they are a part 8:12 of the communities or the characters that they love. 8:15 They want to share in the value. 8:16 They want to collaborate with you creatively. 8:18 I can tell you, in Web2, we've seen it 8:21 with data supporting it, 8:23 that when you listen to the community, 8:25 when you show them you're listening 8:26 and you produce a video in three days, 8:29 responding to something they commented, 8:31 the performance is unequivocally different. 8:34 -
