:05 [Music] 0:07 hey it's dave so we just got news tesla 0:09 increased their prices of their cars 0:11 almost across their entire lineup so how 0:14 much were these price increases why did 0:16 tesla increase its prices and what does 0:18 this mean for tesla and for people 0:20 buying their cars going forward all 0:22 right so let's take a look at some of 0:23 the price increases here sawyer mayor 0:25 tweeted and said that tesla increased 0:27 the price of the model y in the us by up 0:29 to three thousand dollars prices uh now 0:31 starting at sixty five thousand nine 0:33 hundred ninety dollars the model y base 0:35 long range goes up to sixty five 0:37 thousand model wide performance goes up 0:39 to actually sixty 0:40 um nine thousand so two thousand dollar 0:42 increase tesla also increased the other 0:44 vehicle prices too so the model s long 0:46 range goes up by six thousand dollars to 0:48 121 thousand dollars model s long range 0:52 five thousand dollar increase model 0:53 three long range is a two thousand 0:55 dollar increase i think the only car 0:56 that didn't get a price increase was the 0:58 model 3 standard range all right so 1:01 here's how much tesla's most popular 1:03 models have increased in price since the 1:04 start of 2021 model three standard range 1:07 ten thousand dollars model y long range 1:09 sixteen thousand dollars right from 1:11 fifty thousand to sixty six model s long 1:13 range twenty five thousand a model x 1:16 long range is a thirty one thousand uh 1:18 dollar increase in just probably what in 1:20 a year and a half or so all right so why 1:22 is tesla increasing their prices so much 1:25 right over recent months so here's what 1:27 zac kirkhorn had to say their cfo in 1:29 their most recent q1 2022 earnings call 1:32 he said on the price increase front i 1:34 should mention that it may seem like 1:36 maybe we're being unreasonable about 1:38 increasing the prices of our vehicles 1:39 given that we had a record profitability 1:41 this quarter but the wait list for our 1:43 vehicles is quite long and some of the 1:44 vehicles that people order the wait list 1:46 extends into next year so our prices of 1:49 vehicles ordered now are really 1:51 anticipating supplier and logistics cost 1:53 growth that we're aware of and believe 1:55 will happen over the next 6 to 12 months 1:58 so that's why we have the price 2:00 increases today because a court a car 2:02 order today will arrive in some cases a 2:04 year from now so here's why tesla is 2:06 raising their prices tesla lets 2:08 customers lock in a price at the time of 2:10 the reservation and tesla needs to avoid 2:12 a situation where you have too many 2:14 people locking in too low of a price for 2:17 a car that they're going to take 2:18 delivery let's say 12 months from now 2:20 especially in the case that inflation 2:22 accelerates faster than people expect 2:24 see reservations work one way meaning 2:26 you reserve a car and you lock in that 2:28 low price whether you take delivery in a 2:30 week or in 12 months however if the 2:33 price actually decreases you're going to 2:35 cancel your reservation and get a lower 2:37 price with a new reservation so tesla 2:38 needs to be careful about these 2:40 reservations in the case right that they 2:42 come out to be priced too low so if 2:44 there's a wait list then tesla also 2:46 needs to anticipate the cost of goods 2:48 increasing over let's say a period of 12 2:50 months going forward another reason why 2:52 tesla might be increasing prices i think 2:54 is to shorten the wait time you see it 2:56 might be best actually to increase the 2:58 price of their cars to bring down the 2:59 wait time for example if the wait time
3:02 for tesla cars are at let's say two 3:04 months or so then tesla can sell a car 3:06 at basically their real-time cost plus 3:08 margin right without an anticipated 3:11 inflation cost on top of that so in 3:13 other words tesla gets a fair price and 3:14 the customer gets a fair price at that 3:16 time however if there's too long of a 3:19 wait time let's say it's a year out or 3:20 so this is actually a huge disadvantage 3:23 to tesla especially in times of 3:25 inflation because basically you're 3:26 giving a free discount right to people 3:28 with the reservations it's almost like 3:30 an option call right for the consumer or 3:32 the customer they get to put in a 3:33 reservation and actually get the price 3:35 locked in whether or not right they 3:37 choose to execute that option call or 3:39 not so tesla is showing that they're 3:41 taking inflation seriously i think this 3:43 is a good thing because it's better to 3:45 take inflation seriously as a company 3:47 right now rather than to take it too 3:49 lightly see tesla they could be lazy and 3:51 passive and not raise prices but that 3:53 would put them at a risk of being hit 3:55 hard later if inflation rises faster 3:57 than expected so i think all of this is 3:59 showing that tesla is displaying good
4:02 discipline and financial planning most 4:04 of this credit probably goes to their 4:05 cfo zach kierkon all right so some 4:07 takeaways first i personally wish prices 4:09 would stabilize and even decrease some 4:12 especially after some big price 4:14 increases over the past year and a half 4:16 but i do understand tesla's approach and 4:17 i think it's the wisest path 4:19 basically don't get burned by inflation 4:21 right by not increasing prices and 4:23 number two stay ahead of inflation by 4:25 bringing down your wait time don't give 4:27 too many customers right these free 4:29 option calls right to lock in perhaps um 4:31 what could be potentially low prices 4:33 right if inflation accelerates faster 4:34 than expected so overall i think this is 4:36 the right strategy to do and lastly this 4:38 is showing tesla really displaying 4:40 pricing power right they've got a great 4:42 brand a lot of demand for their products 4:44 and they're able to navigate right these 4:46 uncertain times of inflation and 4:48 possible right recession in coming 4:50 months as well being disciplined with 4:51 their operating expenses and by also 4:53 getting ahead of the inflation issue all 4:55 right hope this has been helpful if it 4:56 has good like and subscribe all my 4:58 videos can be found as an audio podcast
